‘Don’t Breathe’ steals thunder in USA box office debut

After the release of Don’t Breathe, Suicide Squad faced a fall in its box office collection at the U.S. as it collected just $12.1 million with 3,582 locations and the fresh release of Fede Alvarez ruled over the past weekend.

But Don’t Breathe (Sony Pictures Entertainment) received reviews from top critics that were 94 per cent positive, according to Rotten Tomatoes, expanding the movie’s appeal beyond the core horror crowd.

After it was initially projected to make no more than $15 million, Don’t Breathe opened with an estimated .1 million instead.

The film starred Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang.

Among other newcomers this week, it was a struggle for the latest Jason Statham film. “Sausage Party” has earned $88.0 million worldwide.

Fantasy films also stumbled this season.

The raunchy animated comedy Sausage Party, with Seth Rogen as the leading voice, made US$7.7 million. In fact, this is often the weekend in which studios release smaller movies that may or may not do well at the box office to begin with.

Each of the above-mentioned films scored a “B” Cinemascore or better based on theater exit polling, with The Conjuring 2 nabbing a rock-solid “A-” grade and everything but Lights Out garnering a “B+”. This brings the Suicide Squad domestic totals up to $282.9 million approximately.

Suicide Squad has, so far, earned a whopping 5 million worldwide, though it won’t be getting any of that green from China. The movie failed to secure a release in the country, which has the second largest movie-going audience in the world and can electrify a film’s box-office results.

Meanwhile, Jason Bourne, the fifth installment in the never-ending Matt Damon franchise, is a textbook example of the importance of performing well in China-and foreign markets more generally. So far, the film has grossed nearly $8.4 million in a domestic-only release.
