Boko Haram commanders killed in air strike, says Nigeria

The Nigerian army’s announcement that Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram leader, was “fatally wounded” in a “spectacular and unprecedented air raid” has sparked a grammar war among Nigerians.

The Premium Times reports that military spokesman Col. Sani Usman explained that “the air interdiction took place last week Friday 19th August 2016, while the terrorists were performing Friday rituals at Taye”, a remote village located deep in the vast Sambisa forest. “Several other terrorists were also wounded”.

Kerry “made very, very strong commitments to the (Nigerian) government that we are going to look at what we can do differently”, the official said, adding that the package for the aircraft was still being considered and needed congressional approval. Usman said the successful operation happened after the Nigerian soldiers had successfully prevented a possible assault on the troop’s base.

On Tuesday morning, Kerry visited Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, and praised him for promoting religious tolerance and understanding among Nigerians.

Boko Haram transforms “the most vulnerable among us into killers”, Mr Kerry said, describing how in its quest to destroy knowledge, the group destroys schools, burns books, murders teachers and kidnaps students.

Since 2014 saw #BringBackOurGirls, numerous girls managed to escape, but the whereabouts of approximately 218 girls remain unknown.

Boko Haram is pledged to Islamic State group “caliph” Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and the group is sometimes referred to as Islamic State West Africa Province.

Boko Haram’s seven-year insurgency has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced more than 2.6 million in Nigeria and neighboring Cameroon, Niger and Chad, where the extremists have extended attacks in recent years.

A video showing dozens of the girls last Sunday said Shekau is willing to negotiate a prisoner swap for detained Boko Haram commanders.

Nigerian Air Force, NAF, said yesterday that its fighter jets in a major air strike have hit and fatally wounded Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, killing some of his key commanders.
