The foreign ministers of Germany, France, and Poland (the so-called “Weimar Triangle”) have agreed that it is necessary to take a greater global effort in order to reduce tensions in Ukraine.

The respective foreign ministers see the group as helping with the many challenges now facing Europe including the repercussions from Britain’s vote to leave the EU. “Their decision reflects a mistake by the European Union, and we have to figure out how to correct the mistake”.
Steinmeier told over 1,000 German diplomats and business executives at a foreign ministry conference that it was in Britain’s interests to start the process quickly given economic effects that were already becoming evident. At the same time, European Union countries that want to take joint initiatives shouldn’t be held back by those that don’t want to join in, he said.
WEIMAR, Germany (AP) – Poland’s foreign minister has lent his support to a Franco-German proposal for a European Security Council.
“On the contrary, we need to find a way so that the phase of confrontation and the growing tension could again shift to a stable understanding of common security”, he said.
The EU also needed a better structure to plan and execute the 11 civilian and six military missions it is now carrying out on three continents, the ministers said, adding that such moves would help strengthen North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

This meant accelerating work to harmonize tax and social structures, which would also make the European Union more competitive internationally, they said.
