More than 300 people were arrested at the Notting Hill Carnival celebrated in London over the bank holiday weekend and five people were stabbed, London Metropolitan Police announced Monday.

Four stabbings took place on the first day of the annual event celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture in London’s west that is traditionally a family-orientated event.

A 20-year-old man suffered non-life threatening injuries in a stabbing in Portobello Road on Sunday, while two boys aged 15 and 16 were stabbed in Ladbroke Grove on the same day.

Some people were arrested for more than one offence, and 26 knives were seized.

There were 440 arrests in total, and many of them were related to drugs and offensive weapons. It quickly grew and this year’s edition featured 60 bands and 38 sound systems.

It estimates the Carnival rubbish will generate around 97,200 kWh of electricity and 19,600 kWh of heat – enough to power 80,000 hot showers or 84km of travel on the London Underground – while also saving 54 tonnes of Carbon dioxide emissions.

A heavy police presence will continue into Monday as the Met has introduced advanced security measures, including a facial recognition system.

That’s in conjunction with their elite team of “super recognisers” monitoring the crowd from CCTV to scan for those banned from the event. Police said there were four incidents involving people being stabbed.

“The database has been populated with images of individuals who are forbidden from attending carnival, as well as individuals wanted by police who it is believed may attend carnival to commit offences”.
