Trump’s team struggles to explain, defend his views
In a speech to supporters overnight, the Republican nominee reiterated his plans to track down and deport illegal USA residents if he becomes President.

Rhetoric on race in America continues at a fever pitch in the presidential contest between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton, as both vie for the backing of minority voters eight years after the United States elected its first president of color.
When Giuliani was asked if Christie was responsible for Trump’s more nuanced policy proposals regarding the nation’s 11 million undocumented immigrants, he said, “The answer to that question is yes”.
“Dwyane Wade’s cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in Chicago”. Pence also did not answer whether the campaign believes, as Trump has said, that children born to people who are in the USA illegally are not US citizens.
The Indiana governor, Conway and other surrogates said the main tenets of Trump’s immigration plan still will include building a wall along the southern USA border and making Mexico pay for it, no path to status adjustment or citizenship for people here illegally and stronger border enforcement.
The politician who once spoke of a “deportation force” did an about face earlier this week when he said he believed undocumented immigrants should pay back taxes but that they should not be deported, signaling he might be open to a legal status for these individuals.
Trump senior communications adviser Jason Miller said in a statement that the billionaire businessman’s “positive message of economic opportunity is working and we see the national and battleground state polls all moving in the right direction”.
“Donald Trump will articulate what we do with the people who are here”.
Donald Trump’s chief supporters, led by his vice presidential running mate, are having trouble speaking for him, especially on immigration policy. His campaign announced on Sunday a $10 million-plus buy for ads to air in nine competitive states starting this coming week.
Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson says he’s optimistic about getting into the presidential debates, but admits it would be “game over” if he doesn’t make the cut. He’s going to be giving prepared remarks on the issue I think very soon.
“If people want safer streets, want their police supported, then they should vote for Donald Trump because that’s what he’ll do”, said New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on ABC’s This Week program.
To be sure, Trump over roughly the past two weeks has increased his efforts to appeal to black voters, arguing that the policies of Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and those of other Democratic lawmakers have failed residents in many US cities, particularly African-Americans.
A few hours later, he followed up with a tweet offering condolences to Wade and his family. He said the killing of someone pushing a stroller “is unacceptable in an American city” and that “the level of violence in Chicago is unacceptable”.
On Sunday, VP candidate Mike Pence appeared on CNN’s State of the Union with Jake Tapper and attempted to clear up confusion by insisting that nothing has changed at all.
