It was a heart-stopping rescue effort as firefighters freed a 10-year-old girl trapped under debris for 17 hours following the devastating quake that rocked central Italy Wednesday morning.

It comes after the United Kingdom government said it had offered help with the recovery effort following Wednesday’s quake, which killed at least 250 people.

Amatrice is one of the worst affected areas, along with the towns of Arquata, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto.

The Foreign Office has not confirmed the deaths of the British nationals.

JERSEY’S Italian community were awaiting further news from central Italy following a devastating natural disaster that has left dozens dead.

Rescuers believe people trapped in the rubble can survive for up to 72-hours so they have been searching around-the-clock.

State-run RAI radio said people ran into the streets in central Umbria and Le Marche regions shortly after the quake struck just after 3:30 a.m.

“The British government has offered any assistance that we can to help with the recovery effort and I have spoken with Italian foreign minister Paolo Gentiloni to express my condolences personally”.

The rescue effort has been hampered by hundreds of aftershocks, including a magnitude 4.3 strong tremor that hit this afternoon.

Officials say there were 3,876 Canadians registered with Global Affairs Canada as being in Italy, with 72 in the areas affected by the natural disaster.
