Jarryd Hayne on 49ers debut: I looked like an American NFL player

I wanted to go out there and look like an American NFL player. He would finish as the game’s leading rusher with 63 yards on 5 attempts.

Blaine Gabbert handed the ball to Jarryd Hayne and off dashed the 49ers newest star down NRG Stadium s field.

And he broke off a huge 53-yard run to really make an impression in his first real NFL action. “Running over people”, Fox Sports US commentators said.

Hayne made an average of 12 yards from punt returns.

Meanwhile, the star on the offensive and special teams end was none other than rookie Jarryd Hayne.

Hayne highlighted the 49ers exhibition opener, and even though they lost 23-10 to the host Houston Texans, his 53-yard run on his second carry had the locker room abuzz afterward.

“We’re definitely going to use him on all facets of the game”, Chryst said.

“It seems like everybody’s surprised”, Tomsula said.

“He never missed a beat when he put on shoulder pads”. If I have one concern, it’s on whether or not he’ll know when to call for a fair catch. “He’s a premier athlete in the world in space”.

But coach Jim Tomsula warned that Hayne is a long way from earning a spot on the 49ers’ 53-man roster. “But the thing that excites me is the type of person that he is”. “You get into a situation you’re rooting for guys, but it has to happen, and he’s one of those guys”. But it’s got to happen. “He played really well”. Had a couple good punt returns.

“I think he did that because he had confidence that it wasn’t just a fog of bodies and that there’s going to be some contact”. I think he s making a very strong case, especially with what he did today.

“That gave me sort of a shot”, Hayne said. I brought a lot of pressure on myself, I wanted to fit in…

– Defensive tackle Darnell Dockett and running back Reggie Bush did not play, as planned. Bowman, who hasn’t played since injuring his left knee in the NFC title game in January 2014, is expected to play next week….
