GMC Canyon Expands Lineup and Powertrains

The V6 is of the 3.6-liters variety but now comes with 308 horsepower (230 kilowatts) and 275 pound-feet (373 Newton-meters), against the predecessor’s 305 hp (227 kW) and 269 lb-ft (365 Nm). Combined with the taller ratios of the eight-speed automatic and a new cylinder deactivation system, it should provide a small improvement in fuel economy.

To no one’s surprise, the GMC Canyon is getting a new powertrain for 2017 just like its twin, the Chevrolet Colorado. We expect they will likely have a moderate price increase, but official 2017 pricing will be released closer to the on-sale date. The previously announced Canyon Denali, and the new All Terrain X package.

A top Canyon Denali model is new for the 2017 model year and includes a special chrome grille, 20-inch aluminum wheels with painted accents, tubular chrome assist steps and other Denali specific interior and exterior features.

The All Terrain X is aimed at the serious off-road enthusiast, adding a few features beyond the current All Terrain Canyon. Inside, things get more lavish with standard heated and air conditioned bucket seats wrapped in leather, a heated steering wheel, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, navigation, and a Bose audio system.

Overall, sales of the GMC Canyon have increased approximately 18% over last year’s numbers.

2017 GMC Canyons with the new engine and transmission will arrive in dealerships near the end of the year.

“Canyon continues to carve out its own niche as the only premium truck in the midsize segment”, said Vice President of GMC Sales and Marketing Duncan Aldred. “With a broader 2017 Canyon lineup and the redesigned Acadia, GMC is offering more choices for finding the premium truck or SUV that matches customers’ design preferences and capability needs”.
