Relatives and friends gathered around the caskets, including those of two small children, which were carried into the tent in pouring rain after a summer storm broke over Amatrice, the worst-hit town from the August 24 quake.

Nearly 30 people died in earthquakes in northern Italy in 2012 and more than 300 in the city of L’Aquila in 2009. Some people are sleeping in cars near their homes for fear of looting.

The official death toll now stands at 290 with most of the dead coming from around the Amatrice area.

Reconstruction efforts following a 2009 quake which killed more than 300 people in the nearby city of L’Aquila have been hampered by red-tape and corruption, and only a tiny part of the town centre has been rebuilt. She didn’t say where the bodies were found in the hill town, but all bodies found in the last few days were located in the rubble of the Hotel Roma.

Amatrice’s mayor has said about 10 people are unaccounted for.

Archibishop Tartaglia highlighted the close links between Scotland and Italy saying Scots were in tears over the tragic events in central Italy where at least 290 people were killed and hundreds more injured after a 6.2-magnitude quake struck in the early hours of Wednesday. Premier Matteo Renzi and President Sergio Mattarella were on hand for the Mass being celebrated by local bishops.

Francis led prayers for the quake victims at the Vatican on Sunday (Aug. 28) and announced plans to visit survivors in the affected area soon.
