Argentina are now third in the qualifying table after winning three of their six games.

The 28-year-old picked up a calf injury during Sunday’s 3-1 victory over West Ham at the Etihad Stadium. They host Uruguay on September before travelling to Venezuela on September 7.

There was no action taken at the time by referee Andre Marriner, but the incident could lead to a retrospective punishment for Aguero that could see him suspended for City’s derby clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford that comes after the worldwide break.

Aguero risks a suspension that would put him out of the Manchester derby against United after the worldwide break.

However, the AFA have confirmed that former Argentina captain Messi will feature for the south Americans despite rumours that he would have been unavailable after suffering a knock against Athletic Bilbao at the weekend in La Liga.

His withdrawal opens the door for Higuain’s Juventus team mate Paulo Dybala or a first cap for Lucas Pratto of Brazil’s Atletico Mineiro or Lucas Alario.
