She blamed the health care system for EpiPens’ rising costs.

It is unclear how big of an impact Mylan’s actions will have on patients.

But a local allergist says, many patients, those on government insurance such as Medicaid or Medicare can’t legally use those coupons. Mylan said Thursday that it was doubling the eligibility for its patient assistance program to people with incomes four times higher than the federal poverty level.

“No one’s more frustrated than me”, she said.

Clinton frequently said during the primary that she would fight pharmaceutical companies – part of an attempt to counter criticism that she was too closely tied to the insurance industry. In April 2001, the device cost $75.80 per pen. According to David Maris, an analyst for Wells Fargo, that price went up by 3 or 4 percent on several occasions before Mylan bought the device in 2007.

“For parents that have to buy multiple EpiPens every year, this price increase could make it prohibitively expensive to ensure their child has access to the device”, Paulsen wrote.

Julie King, a Saratoga Springs mom who watched Bresch’s 18-minute interview, said she found the chief executive’s comments “offensive and condescending”. “It’s a PR move”, she added.

A drug company blasted for raising the price of a life-saving drug is responding to the outcry. “(My insurance company) could come out next year and say, ‘Yeah, we’re not covering that, ‘” Martin said.
