Auburn DB Stephen Roberts suspended for opener after arrest

Roberts was arrested last week on misdemeanor charges of attempting to elude law enforcement and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Roberts was pulled over for a traffic stop on Harmon Drive in Auburn at 10:30 p.m on August 24.

“He will be suspended for this game”, Malzahn said. Roberts is due in court November 17.

Malzahn said Auburn’s team policy is for players not to have handguns, licensed or not.

“Minor setback for a major comeback”, Roberts tweeted Saturday afternoon.

In a statement to AL.com Friday morning, an Auburn spokesman said “Coach (Gus) Malzahn is aware”.

The junior, who started the team’s final three regular season games previous year, was expected to start at safety. No. 2 Clemson, who returns nine starters on offense from a team that went to the 2016 National Championship Game vs. Alabama. “We don’t want our players with them”.

“I do feel good about the secondary that we do have back there, specifically the safeties”, Malzahn said after announcing Roberts’ suspension. At SEC Media Days, Malzahn said those four players would not lose playing time due to their arrest.
