Governor downplays reports that he might resign

If I’ve lost my ability to help Maine people, maybe it’s time to move on.

“I said that those kinds of racially charged comments are not helpful in solving the crisis”, Gattine said Monday.

But yesterday, he went further, saying it’s a “fact” they came from the two MA cities, as well as NY and CT.

LePage, in Boston for a conference with other New England governors and Canadian premiers, doubled down on comments he made last week, claiming to have a three-ring binder of mug shots of alleged drug dealers, of which he said 90 percent were black or Hispanic. Last week, the governor left a voicemail for a Democratic state legislator in which he called him a homophobic slur. On Monday, Republican leaders called for a closed-door meeting with LePage. Malloy had said LePage “sounds like a racist” last week.

“I want to talk to you”.

“You … I need you to, just friggin”. I’ve spent my life helping black people and you little son-of-a-b–, socialist c–sucker. You … “You make me so sick!”

Maine Republicans are still trying to decide how to address the controversy surrounding Governor Paul LePage.

“I made the comment that black people are trafficking in our state, now ever since I said that comment I’ve been collecting every single drug dealer who has been arrested in our state”, LePage responded.

LePage told the State House News Service reporter the information on where the drug dealers come from is “a fact”, and he didn’t “make up the rules”.

During an interview with WVOM-AM, LePage said he’s “looking at all options”, the Portland Press Herald reported. They then plan to join hands and call for LePage to resign.

Republican Senate President Mike Thibodeau and Republican House Minority Leader Ken Fredette met with LePage at the Blaine House on Monday night. Drew Gattine and said it was “unacceptable and totally my fault”.

“I don’t think our caucus is talking about impeachment”, Thibodeau told WMTW. The two had earlier called for “corrective action” but didn’t elaborate on what that might be. Democrats are hoping the rally also brings together residents who are frustrated with the brash governor.

Democrats in the state, however, have said censure wouldn’t go far enough. This, coupled with his history of weird and erratic behavior, has led a variety of ME officials to call for his resignation and question his mental stability. “We think it should be nothing short of that”. The effort was dropped in January before it could be taken up by the full legislature.

“I didn’t know Drew Gattine from a hole in the wall until yesterday”, LePage said.
