Ousted from DNC, Wasserman Schultz faces primary challenge

Wasserman Schultz jumped to an early lead over Canova in a primary colored by leaked emails revealing that DNC officials had worked against Sanders to favor Hillary Clinton in the presidential race. Canova had the backing of Sen. McCain and Rubio are favored to win reelection and are not considered the highest-tier targets for Democrats, who, if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, would need to pick up four seats to take back control of the Senate.

Sanders had for months accused Wasserman Schultz, as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, of favoring Clinton. U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who recently resigned as Democratic National Committee chair, won her primary – the first tough race since being elected to Congress in 2004. Her district, encompassing Miami Beach, leans Democratic and she is likely to win in the November 8 general election.

In an unprecedented move, Senate Majority PAC, a super PAC connected to Reid, even ran ads on Murphy’s behalf – the first time it has intervened in a Democratic primary. Sanders has lent his mailing list to Canova, though he didn’t campaign with him in the weeks preceding the primary there.

In other races, U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown lost a primary as she faces felony fraud charges. Grayson, who is Jewish, was a firebrand on the party’s left and modeled his bid for the Senate on Sanders’ insurgent campaign.

Murphy, meanwhile, overcame a challenge from Rep. Alan Grayson, earning 60 percent of the vote to Grayson’s 17 percent, according to the AP. That’s because his new wife, Dena Grayson, whom he married in May, is contesting for her husband’s congressional seat.

Rubio pulled his name out of the running for the Senate seat he now holds during his failed bid in the Republican presidential primary.

“He constantly says ‘I’m in this for Florida, ‘ but he’s clearly not running for Senate for Florida”.

The Senate race now shifts to the general election, with Murphy and Rubio facing off on November 8.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee seen here answering questions from reporters on September 13, 2011, is withholding funding from the Palestinians because of the Palestinian Authority’s statehood push in the United Nations.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz will soon learn whether the controversy surrounding her resignation as the Democratic National Committee chairwoman will cost her a seventh term in Congress.

Ndogo suggested that Wasserman-Schultz will, because,”If you have the ability and you have the power to use your influence, and choose to use your influence to support the candidacy of someone else in a way that is against the rules and willing to undermine democracy to that end just so that you can get the candidate that you believe in, regardless of what the people believe, then certainly you would do that for your own race”.
