Now for the real test as London Bridge Station opens new concourse

Throughout construction work Network Rail has kept the station open for the 50 million passengers who use it every year, starting on the south side of the station and working in phases to build the new platforms and concourse below.

Network Rail has plans to expand the number of “destination stations” across the country that could attract visitors in their own right, along the lines of King’s Cross and London Bridge.

The £1 billion redevelopment at London Bridge follows major works at St Pancras and King’s Cross in north London, Birmingham…

Trains into Charing Cross have now begun calling at London Bridge for the first time since January 2015, but Cannon Street trains stopped serving the station on Friday and will not resume until January 2018.

This is a major milestone for passengers, who will be able to experience the brand new concourse and facilities for the first time.

The station is the fourth busiest in the United Kingdom and the changes, which will be complete by 2018, will enable passengers to access all platforms at once.

Mark Carne, Network Rail’s chief executive, said: “This is a big step towards the bigger, better railway passengers deserve”. But the station will face a stiffer test this morning as thousands return to work after the Bank Holiday weekend.

He said: “We are rebuilding Britain’s fourth busiest station – the tracks, the platforms and the infrastructure which enables trains to run – all the while keeping the station open and doing our best to keep passengers moving”.

A new railway bridge has been slid into place in Norwich.

Sarah Samuel: “New London Bridge concourse is flippin’ great – a much-needed improvement to overcrowded station”. “Needs good station maps/graphics and more ticket machines”.

The spokesman added: “The Victorian bridge had been damaged at times during its service, but the new structure is robust enough that, if it is hit by a vehicle, normal railway services will not be affected”.
