Protests erupted in Liver and Sallar villages of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district when government forces according to locals went on a rampage and ransacked the houses.

After 51 days, authorities lifted curfew from Kashmir since the ongoing unrest began on 8 July, officials said.

Clashes between pro-Pakistan protesters and police were also reported in other areas, with at least eight civilians reported injured.

“Curfew has been lifted from Kashmir except from Pulwama town and the areas in Srinagar falling under the jurisdiction of police stations MR Gunj and Nowhatta”, a police official said.

Authorities said they had made a decision to lift the curfew over much of the region in an attempt to de-escalate what has become the worst violence in the region since 2010.

At least 71 people have been killed and over 11,000 injured in the ongoing violence that started here on July 9, a day after the killing of top militant, Burhan Wani. However, private cars and auto-rickshaws were seen plying on select routes of mainly uptown Srinagar. Separatists have extended their protest shutdown call up to September 1 asking people not to resume normal activities. The protestors clashed with police and paramilitary personnel, who fired teargas shells and resorted to baton charge, which injured over a dozen people.

Even as schools, colleges and other educational institutions and shops remained closed due to the strike, the attendance in government offices and work in banks have improved since yesterday, the officer said.

Residents of Srinagar’s Batamalloo area alleged that the security forces forcibly entered their homes, ransacked them and also thrashed inmates. It claimed that NIA has been given the task to drag these “fabricated cases” to Delhi to “pressurize the separatist leadership”.

A statement issued by the police here said that minor incidents of stone pelting were reported from Srinagar, Anantnag, Kulgam, Baramula, Kupwara and Bandipora districts. “Greater movement of private, passenger vehicular traffic and people was observed in major areas of the Valley including Srinagar city today”, the statement said.
