The governor said the Maryland Transportation Authority completed a life-cycle analysis on the bridge previous year and found it can be safely maintained until 2065, but he said it’s time to start planning.

Gov. Larry Hogan unveiled the new Maryland license plate Tuesday at a press conference where he also shared plans to study ways to alleviate traffic on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

The MDTA – the agency that finances, owns, operates, and maintains the state’s eight toll facilities – will conduct the study, and more information will be available on mdta.maryland.gov as the Tier 1 NEPA study progresses. It requires state and federal agencies to consider environmental consequences of proposed projects as part of the decision-making process.

Hogan said it was his idea to use the flag design on the new plates and that he was personally involved in the design process.

“I won’t be the governor when this bridge is finished, but I’ll be the one when it gets started”, Hogan said. “We love our sports teams, we love our crabs and we definitely love our beautiful flag”, Hogan said. The Maryland Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Administration will start issuing the new plate on Monday, Sept. 26, for all passenger cars, SUVs, trucks, motorcycles, and multipurpose vehicles.

Those who have the old plates can continue using them. The new plate has “Maryland” above the number with the lower third bearing the iconic state flag.

It’ll replace the War of 1812 plate, but if you like that atrocity, you can keep it! Approximately 740,000 are issued annually, according to the state.

Earlier this year, Maryland began issuing redesigned driver’s licenses that also feature a Maryland flag design.
