Trump to meet Mexican president ahead of immigration speech

It’s a defining issue for Trump, but one on which he has appeared to waiver.

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has announced plans to travel to Mexico on Wednesday for a meeting with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

He tweeted: I have accepted the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto, of Mexico, and look very much forward to meeting him tomorrow.

“I invited Mexico to the US presidential candidates, to discuss bilateral relations”.

A sudden global trip by a USA presidential candidate would be a logistical and security nightmare on such short notice.

Trump aides did not immediately detail the candidate’s goals for the meeting with Peña Nieto, who faces deep disapproval himself.

Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump spoke in Everett, Washington on Tuesday night.

The potential visit follows months of warring words between Trump and Mexico’s leaders, including when Peña Nieto compared Trump to brutal dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

He has steadfastly demanded that Mexico pay for the wall, a position Trump supporters cheer but which Mexican officials scoff at.

In his June 2015 candidacy announcement, Trump claimed that “The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems” before accusing the Mexican government of sending immigrants who are “bringing drugs”.

The New Yorker didn’t mention the trip and didn’t spend much time discussing illegal immigration during an evening rally outside Seattle, although he teased his scheduled speech on immigration that’s set for Wednesday evening in Phoenix. The GOP standard bearer has made headlines lately because of the various stances he’s taken on immigration policy in recent weeks.

Instead of insisting on removing millions of the undocumented, he has recently focused on promising deportations of those immigrants with criminal records.

But she stressed Trump was committed to a “fair and humane” approach to securing America’s borders. “You have to eliminate sanctuary cities”.

“We’re going to win this state”, Trump told the crowd. “And you have to secure the border”.

In an interview in March, Mr Pena Nieto said there was “no scenario” where Mexico would engage with such a policy – adding Mr Trump’s rhetoric was damaging relations between Mexico and the US.
