UWS street almost swallows SUV whole after water-main break

An SUV fell into a sinkhole after a water main break on the Upper West Side Monday night. The break caused an sport utility vehicle parked on the street to fall into a sinkhole.

Besides sending an SUV back into the loam, the burst main also left apartments in the area-many which sell for millions of dollars-with dirty brown water, or no water at all.

The fire department reportedly classified the incident as a “large water main break”, but is purportedly unsure how many gallons of water was released from the broken system.

The water flooded streets from West 87th Street up to West 90th Street. We bathe in this water.

“We’re in shock right now”, said Vonray White, one of the residents without water.

The MTA is now rerouting the M7 and M11 buses. A dance studio on West 89th Street reportedly suffered a great deal of damage, and firefighters spent several hours inspecting and pumping water out of basements.
