United States admits 10000th Syrian refugee

The 10,000th Syrian refugee has been admitted to the us, marking a goal President Obama had hoped to reach by the end of the fiscal year next month, millions in Syria have been forced to flee a civil war and persecution from ISIS.

“Refugees are the most thoroughly screened category of travelers to the United States, and Syrian refugees are subject to even greater scrutiny”, U.S. Ambassador to Jordan Alice Wells said on Sunday, according to The Associated Press. Monday’s announcement means the White House attained its goal a month ahead of schedule, an achievement due at least in large part to a surge of State Department and Homeland Security officials deployed to the Middle East to help process a backlog of applications.

“While refugee admissions are only a small part of our broader humanitarian efforts in Syria and the region, the president understood the important message this decision would send, not just to the Syrian people but to the broader worldwide community”, Susan Rice, US national security adviser, said.

And that was after Secretary of State John Kerry pledged to the global community that the Obama Administration would step up its commitment to protect the families fleeing from Syria’s six-year civil war.

The Catholic Family Center is expecting more Syrian and Congolese refugees to arrive in Rochester in 2017.

The number of refugees accepted by the US was a minuscule fraction of the 20 million refugees fleeing war zones and other harsh conditions around the world. Following the assault, 53 percent of Americans said they believed the US should stop accepting refugees altogether.

MI is the top destination, taking in slightly more than 1,000 refugees. In the first six months after Obama’s announcement of the goal last September 10, only about 1,200 Syrian refugees had resettled in the U.S.

While the US has made significant monetary contributions to Middle Eastern countries who are bearing the heaviest burden, its own intake of refugees has been modest.

That’s a significant increase over the 2015 fiscal year, when the government reported accepting about 1,000 refugees, and it came over the objections of politicians who were opposed to allowing more Syrians into the country.

He frequently says that Syrian refugees pose a security threat in light of recent lone-wolf attacks that perpetrators indicated were inspired by the Islamic State group.

The U.S. will admit an estimated 85,000 refugees in total in fiscal year 2016 from countries such as Syria, Iraq, El Salvador, Somalia, and Ukraine. “Respecting Rights and Securing Solutions” details recommendations for the administration and Congress and aims to strengthen USA leadership on addressing the Syrian refugee crisis. “This increase in Syrian refugee resettlement is not surprising as our state continues to be a welcoming home for refugees who go on to contribute to our economic comeback and Michigan’s overall quality of life”.
