Swimmer search launched at Camber Sands days after five deaths

Sussex Police said they were called to the scene after a member of the public contacted them and the coastguard at Camber Sands after seeing an abandoned pair of flip flops next to the sea and a female diving into the water at this location.

Nitharsan’s brother Ajirthan Ravi has said that the five friends, who knew each other since they were five, went in the auto yesterday to Camber Sands on a day trip on one of the hottest days of the year.

The RNLI also said a team will be on hand to give safety information to all beach-goers between Saturday and Monday.

The bank holiday RNLI service at Camber Sands, near Rye in East Sussex, is created to “reassure the public and advise on safety”, said council officials.

Friend Charles Bosco, 27, from west London, said he had known Mr Ravi since the age of 10, and described him as a “lovely guy”.

Five men, thought to be in their late tweens and early twenties from London, died in total in circumstances which belied the calm sea and shallow waters in the area.

She said: “The first man was pulled out of the sea unconscious, maybe 20 minutes later a woman came over shouting, and saying there’s more in there”.

“If you manage to do one thing to day, please share this with your friends, and please stay as safe as possible”.

“We recommended lifeguards as one control measure, alongside education for people, and the beach patrols which Rother District Council provides”.

Sussex Police has since indicated that so-called “rip tides”, or fast flowing bodies of water that can drag even experienced swimmers into deep water, may be the cause of the mysterious deaths.

The swimmer believed to have been missing at a Sussex beach has been found, the coastguard has announced.

“Having said that, the RNLI are providing a temporary service this weekend”.

Despite paramedics’ efforts to save them the first three men died after being pulled from the sea just after 2pm on Wednesday.

The sea around Camber Sands has no especially unsafe features and the deaths remain “very much unexplained”, said an RNLI worker positioned further up the coast.

Chief Superintendent Di Roskilly says this “has been an incredibly tragic incident”.
