The Aussies, who can wrap up the five-match series with victory, have made two changes to their side. They folded on the last ball of the 50th over after electing to bat first.

Bettering his previous best of 4-58, all-rounder Hastings finished with 6-45. The on-field umpire gave the batsman not out before Australia successfully reviewed the decision.

As well as the inclusion of Boland, Australia also called on the services of Usman Khawaja, in for Shaun Marsh, who broke a finger while fielding in the third ODI.

But a maiden ODI half-century to the impressive Dhananjaya de Silva in his fifth ODI began the recovery, with skipper Mathews in support until he was forced to retire hurt on 28 after injuring his right calf.

De Silva, whose maiden ODI half-century included nine boundaries, looked a little edgy after Mathews´ departure and soon departed after spooning a catch to mid-wicket off Hastings.

After Mathews’ exit, Sri Lanka lost 3-13 to hand the impetus back to Australia, but their lower order rallied – Sachith Pathirana (24), Dilruwan Perera (18) and Thisara Perera (13) all making key contributions.

Hastings´ double strike in the 48th over brought him his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs. He returned later and scored 40.
