Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero charged with violent conduct by FA

There was no action taken at the time by referee Andre Marriner, but the incident could lead to a retrospective punishment for Aguero that could see him suspended for City’s derby clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford that comes after the global break.

The striker was charged with violent conduct for elbowing Winston Reid during City’s 3-1 win over West Ham on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

The Argentine global now faces a three-match ban that would see him miss Premier League games against Manchester United and Bournemouth and a League Cup third-round tie against Swansea City.

If the referee did not see the incident, Aguero could be charged under the FA’s retrospective punishment rules and face a three-match ban. He has until 6pm on Wednesday 31 August to reply.

A three-match ban would also include a Premier League game against Bournemouth and an EFL Cup trip to Swansea.

‘Each panel member will review the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence.

No timescale has been given for his return, with Aguero potentially facing FA charges for elbowing Hammers defender Winston Reid during the match.

Argentina are now third in the qualifying table after winning three of their six games.
