Garrett and Stephen Jones are being vague on a time frame for Romo’s return, but multiple reports are more specific, indicating the 36-year-old quarterback will miss six to 10 weeks with his injury.

Yet, coach Jason Garrett still says Romo is day to day with a fractured bone in his back and refuses to publicly rule him out for the September 11 opener against the New York Giants. Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril delivered the hit to Romo’s back as he tried sliding after taking off running with the ball.

Romo missed the majority of last season after twice breaking his collarbone, and has previously battled with fractured bones in his back. The rookie quarterback out of Mississippi State will be supported by an excellent offense when he assumes the starting job, which is likely sooner than anyone expected.

Tony Romo just can not stay healthy.

Romo said he had no pain after the game and his recovery was an example of how strong his back was.

With Romo on the bench most of last season with a back injury, the Cowboys suffered through a 4-12 season.

Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott is now the franchise’s backup and has had an outstanding preseason debut.

The Cowboys know the National Football League regular season is completely different than the preseason when team’s play second and third-string players, but their is no doubt they are likely impressed with his production through three preseason games. Rookie Dak Prescott will get the first opportunity as the next man up. Prescott has been impressive all preseason.

After the game, the Cowboys and Romo thought they had dodged a bullet. Prescott has completed 39-of-50 passes for 454 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. The 6-2, 238-pounder also has seven rushes for 53 yards and two touchdowns.

“I think the biggest thing for all of us is focus on doing our jobs”.

Owner Jerry Jones was asked whether there was any chance Romo would not be ready for week 1. He threw some passes on the sideline but was held out for the rest of the game by coach Jason Garrett after lobbying to return.
