San Diego Chargers pull offer for Joey Bosa

The stalemate between the Chargers and first-round draft pick Joey Bosa took another turn Wednesday, after the defensive end from Ohio State rejected the team’s latest contract offer. Until then, Bosa will remain the only National Football League first-round draft pick still unsigned. Between July 28 and August 23, the Chargers’ offer had gone from 57 percent to be paid out in 2016 to 85 percent, but with Ayrault demanding a “number higher” than San Diego’s best offer, the Chargers have made a decision to withdraw their contract offer.

In the deal the Chargers offered Bosa the second most year one money only being behind rookie quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles Carson Wentz.

“Probably since September”, San Diego Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco said after the team drafted Joey.

The San Diego Chargers will reassess their next contract offer to Joey Bosa amid concerns he will be unable to play a full 16-game season in 2016.

If Joey can’t come to an agreement with the team soon, he may not be able to play at all in the 2016-2017 season because of the time he’s missed in training camp. “Since Joey will not report at this time, his ability to produce has been negatively impacted”. They have since pulled that offer and are preparing to move on without the #3 overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Also Wednesday, the Chargers said defensive end Damion Square has been suspended four games without pay for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. A visibly shaken New York Giants owner John Mara says he is fine with the NFL’s one-game suspension of placekicker Josh Brown despite allegations Brown abused his ex-wife as many as 20 times prior to the Giants signing Brown to a two-year extension last spring.

However, San Diego has now upped that amount to 85 percent of the $17 million in this calendar year. I would have liked to see what kind of challenge he would present to the 49ers next week, and what he could do for an very bad Chargers defense, but odds seem to be increasing that we won’t see any of that.

As much as Bosa sitting out as a rookie would hurt his image, this hurts the Chargers even more. He nearly assuredly would not be a top 3 pick in the 2017 draft, but he would get a fresh start with a new team.
