Police said Clyde was returned to the aquarium by a group of people.

Police put out an appeal and the animal, called Clyde, was taken back to the aquarium nearly 24 hours after going missing, from the Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port.

“We’re keeping an open mind as to why Clyde was taken but we need to stress that without specialist care, Clyde may die”.

In an appeal on Facebook this morning, the force had written: ‘At 5.30pm on 30th August we were called to the Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port to a reported theft of a turtle.

Detectives issued a CCTV image of a woman they want to speak to about the theft of the 20cm long reptile. The boy was seen carrying something suspiciously turtle-like under a jumper. Information can be passed anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Clyde, the small turtle stolen from an aquarium, has been returned safe and sound.
