Race Tightens as Trump Chips Away at Clinton’s Lead

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has opened up a significant lead of seven percentage points over her Republican rival Donald Trump, a latest poll has said, even as other surveys indicated a tightening race in the key states of Pennsylvania and Ohio.

In her speech, Clinton championed the notion of USA exceptionalism, a term traditionally embraced by Republicans.

She will also emphasize the growing list of Republicans who have backed her campaign.

Trump’s campaign responded to the speech by saying that Clinton has proven that she is “fundamentally unequipped to further the national security interests of the United States and stand up for our veterans”. “In fact, we are the indispensable nation”. “And it says a lot about the person doing the insulting”. “It means that we recognize America’s unique and unparalleled ability to be a force for peace and progress, a champion for freedom and opportunity”.

Clinton’s midday address at the American Legion’s annual convention in Cincinnati Wednesday comes as Trump plans a last-minute trip to Mexico hours before he delivers a long-expected speech on immigration. And she rehearses, over and over again, to flawless the pacing and substance of her presentation. “That is not how it works”. Former Bush official Ricardo Reyes co-founded the group R4C (Republicans for Clinton) to make the case that Republicans should vote for Clinton over Trump, but vote for the GOP down the rest of the ticket.

While Trump has not yet shown the capability or willingness to run a campaign seemingly capable of challenging her, the length of time between now and the election is an eternity in politics.

The former secretary of state pledged on Wednesday that, as president, she would “never, ever disrespect Gold Star families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation or prisoners of war who endured so much in our name”.

As would be expected considering all these factors, Clinton has consistently led Trump in nearly every national and swing state poll taken since the Democratic National Convention in late July and is a pretty heavy favorite to win in November.

“This election shouldn’t be about ideology”, she said.

She’s studying up, not just on policy, but on Trump himself, as her team is conducting “a forensic-style analysis” of his previous debate performances. “It truly is about who has the experience and temperament to serve as president and commander in chief”.
