“Saina Nehwal has sustained an intra-articular injury (inside the joint) to her right knee”.
The injury, which was also cited as the reason behind her shocking group stage exit at the Rio Olympics, hampered her on-court movement in the event, with Nehwal looking visibly uncomfortable during her last match against Marija Ulitina of Ukrain.
Nehwal played with a strapped knee in her final group game.
On Sunday however, she uploaded the image of her knee’s broken bone. This displaced fragment is causing her impingement and pain.
“After the surgery”, Saina, 26, tweeted and posted a rosy, cheerful smiley, indicating her present condition, though she earlier said she was a little scared and could not sleep most of the previous night. “I am still a little exhausted after the surgery”.
The former world number one will require post-operative rest for three weeks, followed by sport rehabilitation, physiotherapy and training. Saina is likely to be out of action for four months, according to a tweet that was retweeted by Saina.

Meanwhile, Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta wished Nehwal a speedy recovery. “BAI will bear all the expenses for this surgery”, Das Gupta told mid-day from Lucknow on Saturday.
