“After 4-0 (in the first set) it was very even games, even on my serve”, said the Russian.

“I was shaking a little bit at the end”, admitted 26-year-old Sevastova, who stepped away from the game in 2013, exhausted of dealing with injuries.

She returned in 2015, and reached WTA finals in Mallorca and Bucharest this year.

Muguruza wasn’t feeling her best in her opening-round match against Elise Mertens, and it showed early on. And in his first-round U.S. Open victory over Jerzy Janowicz, Djokovic received treatment on his right arm and served much slower.

Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic had 15 double-faults and lost to 120th-ranked qualifier Ryan Harrison of the United States 6-7 (4) 7-5 7-5 6-1.

“I don’t think about the French Open any second”.

Rafael Nadal is delighted to have beaten Andreas Seppi of Italy in his second round match at the US Open. Cilic eased past Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.

Garbine Muguruza, of Spain, watches the video board after a call was challenged during her match against Anastasija Sevastova, of Latvia, at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, in NY.

The 57th-ranked Lucic-Baroni upset second-seeded Simona Halep in the third round in 2014. “I was down 6-1 (actually 6-2), 4-1 (in the fourth round in 2009) to her once on this court I said ‘I can do this, I can pull this through.’ And I won last time and I won today and I’m really proud of that”.

Asked what she would do to celebrate, Sevastova said she would go out with her mum, who was watching her daughter for the first time at a grand slam.

After a 7-6 (2), 6-2 second-round win over Cagla Buyukakcay on Wednesday, the 14th-seeded Kvitova explained: “For me, it’s really exhausting to still be in the auto and it’s a lot of people here”. A year later, Sevastova was in the second round of the main draw playing a night match on Ashe.

Kerber appeared on course for a dominant victory at Louis Armstrong Stadium, having outplayed her opponent to move into a 6-2, 4-1 lead in hot NY conditions. She had won two matches at the same tournament just once since early March.

Top seed Novak Djokovic reached round three without hitting a ball as Jiri Vesely withdrew before their match.

Last year’s finalist Vinci – the seventh seed – saw off Christina McHale 6-1 6-3, eighth seed Keys crushed Kayla Day 6-1 6-1, two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova overcame Cagla Buyukakcay 7-6 (7-2) 6-3, Svitolina outlasted Lauren Davis 6-1 4-6 6-3 and Bencic trumped Andrea Petkovic 6-3 6-2.

Australian Open champ Angelique Kerber progressed through to the third round with a 6-2 7-6 (7) win in 92 minutes over Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Next came Wednesday’s 7-5, 6-4 loss. However, the Dane – a two-time U.S. Open runner-up – battled back for a 6-4, 6-4 victory, a reward for an aggressive approach as 24 winners outweighed 17 unforced errors.
