Four arrested as result of DUI checkpoint

Sobriety checkpoints and roving DUI patrols will be conducted over this holiday weekend, the Center for Traffic Safety said.

Although the number of alcohol-related crashes is going down, the number of drug-related crashes is increasing, the release states.

In California, this deadly crime led to 802 deaths and almost 24,000 serious injuries in 2012 because someone failed to designate a sober driver. Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed lives and resulted in injury crashes harming many of our friends and neighbors, said Sgt. Morris.

During the checkpoint, located on southbound Route 1 between Howard Street and Gorman Road, officers kept an eye out for impaired driving, alongside representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, who gave drivers handouts with DUI facts and statistics.

Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.

The California Office of Traffic Safety DDVIP (Designated Driver VIP) mobile app is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. DUI and drug-impaired arrests can cost around $10,000, jail time, the loss of driver’s license and high insurance rates.
