Michel Temer sworn in as new Brazilian president
Alongside this, Temer’s government risks entanglement in a sweeping investigation of kickbacks at state oil company Petrobras, that already ensnared dozens of politicians in Rousseff’s coalition. The vote ended 13 years of progressive Workers Party rule.

Sworn in to serve out the remainder of Rousseff’s four-year presidential term up to the end of 2018, Temer vowed to create jobs in the recession-stricken country and guarantee “political stability” to lure investors.
“All solidarity with @dilma and the people of Brazil, we condemn the right-wing oligarchic coup, those who fight will prevail!” said Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Twitter. Without them, he said, ” society will be able to breathe easily, even knowing the economic difficulties, the level of unemployment”.
Moreover the impeachment does not restore public confidence in Brazil’s leaders, or diminish the corruption that pervades in the country’s politics.
In a separate vote, the senate voted 42 to 36 not to bar Rousseff from public office for eight years.
“The punishment is disproportional in relation to the crime she is accused of”, he said.
Government ministers are promising progress now that “interim” is no longer part of Temer’s title.
When Temer announced the opening of the Olympics on August 5, he was so vociferously booed that he remained out of sight for the remainder of the games. “The kind of smoky-room feeling about the way impeachment has proceeded gives a very sort of unsavory taste to the whole impeachment process”.
Venezuela and Ecuador both pulled their ambassadors from Brazil in protest at Rousseff’s removal.
“Impeachment isn’t only about a crime”, said Sen.
Shares of Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras (ADR) (NYSE: PBR), a company that was closely related to the corruption scandals around Rousseff, were down nearly 4 percent.
The verdict came down after Rousseff, the country’s first female president, underwent more than 14 hours of questioning on Monday. The vote, passing the needed two-thirds majority, meant she was immediately removed from office.
Aecio Neves, leader of the center-right PSDB party that backs Temer, said the divisions had caused acute concern among his allies, but he denied there was any prospect of a split.
So far he’s struggled in the almost four months he’s served as interim president following Rousseff’s May impeachment, which suspended her from office while a final trial was prepared.
Temer is a traditional conservative politician that is expected to make deep cuts to social spending programs enacted by Rousseff’s Worker’s Party.
Sen. Ronaldo Caiado of the Democrats argued that Rousseff should be ousted, saying that lawmakers weren’t the ones behind the impeachment process.
“I know I will be judged, but my conscience is clear”.
Brazil’s Senate has voted to permanently remove President Dilma Rousseff from office.
Rousseff will not go to jail after her conviction, but she expressed defiance throughout her trial, insisting that Brazil’s economic crisis was largely the result of shifts in the global economy that cut commodities prices.
Temer was sworn in as Brazil’s new le.
In São Paulo, fireworks were set off in the region of Paulista avenue (in the city center) and cars honked their horns in Higienópolis (in the West Zone). “Dilma leaves, Temer comes, nothing will change”.
Even a few senators who voted against Ms. Rousseff publicly expressed feelings of sadness or misgiving, triggering social media commentary about whether such sentiments were honest or merely for show.
Law professor Silvana Batini of the Getulio Vargas Foundation in Rio told AFP that Rousseff could run for office again but faced uncertainty with the appeals and other court cases pending that could affect her political fate.
They think that they defeated us, but they are deceived. “This was a coup against the people and the nation”. Millions took to the streets this year to demand her removal, less than two years after she was re-elected. “I will never stop fighting”.
Her departure became a foregone conclusion ahead of the vote, as a growing number of senators said publicly they would vote against her.
Ms. Rousseff’s triumphant adversaries face many challenges.

The country’s stocks have been outperforming this year on a potential change in leadership and hope that a new leader will turnaround Brazil’s economy, reported CNBC’s Seema Mody on “Closing Bell” on Wednesday afternoon.
