Tropical Storm Hermine headed towards Florida

The storm was moving toward the north-northeast near 8 miles per hour, and this motion with an increase in forward speed was expected to continue through Thursday. Interests along the United States east coast from Georgia through the Carolinas should monitor the progress of this system.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami on Wednesday had posted a hurricane watch for areas in Florida and one tropical storm warning beginning Thursday. Forecasters say it could become a tropical storm later in the day or overnight. The NHC warned of 3 to 5 feet of storm surge possible from the Ochlockonee River to the Suwannee River and 2 to 4 feet or storm surge possible from Indian Pass to the Ochlockonee River.

Farther east, Hurricane Gaston has weakened a little as it drifts northward in the middle of the Atlantic.

Madeline would be the first hurricane to make landfall on the Big Island of Hawaii since accurate records began in 1949, according to the Weather Underground.

Hurricane Watches and Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued from roughly around Destin to Tarpon Springs. A tropical storm warning is in effect from the Anclote River to the Walton/Bay County line.

The storm’s track and expected impact will continue to be monitored by the National Hurricane Center.

“The hurricane watch, by definition, means winds of hurricane-force would be possible”, he said. Hermine is expected to drop between 5 and 10 inches of rainfall in parts of northwest Florida through Friday, with some areas getting up to 20 inches, according to an advisory Wednesday from the National Hurricane Center.

The storm would likely drift out to sea in the afternoon on Labor Day. Winds will range from 15-40 miles per hour with gusts up to 55 mph. North of Florida, the Atlantic Coast should brace for up to 8 inches of rain and gusty wind from Hermine on Friday and Saturday.
