Jeremy Corbyn proposing digital ‘bill of rights’

And although the meeting in Rutherglen was not conducted in a hostile environment, one member told the Reformer Labour was “finished” if Mr Corbyn was re-elected.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is set to crush Owen Smith in the party leadership contest, even though a bulk of those voting for him say he is unelectable as a prime minister and not competent as a leader, according to the latest poll.

Amidst all the chatter about the two rival factions within the Labour party itself, the poll also gives a sense of the gaping disparity contained in the membership – the ones tasked with picking the party’s new leader.

Jeremy Corbyn plans to make Labour’s next general election campaign a digital affair, modelled in part on the social media techniques used by Bernie Sanders during his run for the Democratic nomination in the US.

As part of his digital manifesto he will announce plans for high speed broadband and mobile connectivity for every household, company and organisation in Britain, no matter how rural.

The promise is part of a wider announcement of the Labour leader’s digital policies, including a commitment to universal high-speed broadband and mobile connectivity across the United Kingdom, and to new online learning resources.

Emily Thornberry said she was “disgusted” at attempts to block Mr Corbyn from being put on the leadership ballot paper because he did not have enough support among MPs.

Repeating the mantra that austerity was not working, and that it had disproportionately harmed women, he said that under his leadership Labour’s public investment strategy would provide the foundation for an economy that delivers for women.

“We will channel this new energy and creativity into Labour’s general election campaign whenever it comes”.

“Instead of agitating for a second independence referendum the SNP should focus on the bread and butter issues of government, like getting people back into work and giving everybody a fair chance in life”.

What do you think is the most significant thing Jeremy Corbyn has achieved as leader of the Labour Party? “If the Scottish people chose that’s what they wanted and there was agreement in the Labour party then that would be for them to determine it”.

Mr Corbyn’s digital drive comes after the House of Lords Select Committee on Digital Skills found that London ranked 26th out of 33 European capital cities for broadband speed, while the United Kingdom came ninth out of 28 EU countries. In the Q&A session at the end of the press conference, Corbyn even said he has an “open mind” on nationalising the country’s broadband network.
