Sanchez, Martin help Blue Jays beat Orioles 5-3

Despite a sore left hamstring Saunders would continue that dominance with a double and a two-run homer in the seventh that tied the game 3-3.

Toronto manager John Gibbons said these are the type of games that happen when the Jays and Orioles get together. “We’re not sitting where we’re at right now without him, that’s for sure. We’ll bounce back tomorrow but, shoot, he’s been fantastic”.

The Orioles (72-60) pulled within three games of first-place Toronto (75-57) in the American League East race.

The Blue Jays had a gilt-edged opportunity to blow the game open in the third inning and came up empty.

In the eighth, Jonathan Schoop walked and Wieters homered off Grilli (4-2), his 12th of the season.

The Jays’ rotation may not be as high-potential as the Indians or as great in the first two as the Rangers, but they could have the best or most reliable one-through-four of any team in the American League playoffs conversation right now, which makes them an extremely unsafe team heading into October. They were down and away off the plate.

NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2 (at Philadelphia) – Washington’s Max Scherzer didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning and was dominant through eight. Zach Britton recorded his 39th save of the season out of 39 attempts, staying ideal on the season.

Greinke (12-4) allowed two runs – one earned – and six hits to earn his ninth win in 13 career starts against San Francisco and his first overall since August 9.

Yet they drew a total of just 31,615 to the first two games of the Blue Jays series, which is nearly 10,000 fewer fans than the Blue Jays average for one home game in Toronto.

Despite losing last night in Baltimore are the Blue Jays a safe money line play tonight when they visit the Orioles at 7:05PM ET?

On offense it was three home runs (of course) that did the trick with one each from Steve Pearce, Manny Machado, and Matt Wieters.

Hendricks, who allowed only one walk, lowered his majors-leading earned run average to a miserly 2.09 per nine innings.

Kevin Pillar gave the Jays a 1-0 lead in the second with a two-out bloop single to center.

Daniel Hudson gave up an RBI single to Angel Pagan in the ninth but retired three batters for his second save.

Toronto used its power to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first while forcing Gallardo to throw 26 pitches.

“We finally found some barrels on the balls and we’re able to drive in some runs in key situations”, Machado said. Sanchez got the victory against Baltimore despite the homer binge on June 12 before allowiing three earned runs in a pair of subsequent starts versus the Orioles.

Orioles: RHP Darren O’Day (right shoulder rotator cuff strain) is “progressing well” but there is still no timetable for his return to the bullpen, Showalter said.

Aaron Sanchez doesn’t often need all of Martin’s gifts to get the job done on the mound but he was certainly appreciative of the two-run home run that Martin smacked in the top of the first to help stake him to a 3-0 lead in what turned into a 5-3 victory for the Toronto Blue Jays over the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday.

Our guys actually had base runners in innings 1-4, but couldn’t take advantage of them. He owns a 2.99 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP through 24 starts and after being optioned to the minors in effort to get him extended rest, he’s back up to the majors tonight.

Orioles: Ubaldo Jimenez (5-11, 6.62 ERA) is back in the rotation with the injury to Tillman.
