BA resumes direct flights from London to Iran

British Airways has today relaunched flights to Tehran, marking the first direct route to the Iranian capital by the British flag carrier in four years.

The direct service hasn’t been available since 2012, when it was suspended due to instability in the country.

BA described the Iranian capital as “an important destination” for the airline, according to the Guardian.

The then British foreign secretary Philip Hammond said at the time that British firms should take advantage of the opportunities that would open up.

The relationship between Britain and Iranhas improved in recent years, following the lifting of sanctions on Iranearlier this year and the reopening of the British Embassyin Tehran in 2015, EFE news reported.

The carrier said it will run flights six days a week from London Heathrow, using a Boeing 777.

British Airways plans six roundtrip flights per week with more flights scheduled to be added later this year.

“Iran is a fascinating country, full of incredible and surprising places for tourists to visit and discover its sophisticated and ancient culture”.

It has been possible to fly to Tehran from Paris since April, when Air France resumed the route for the first time since 2008.
