Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 will power Google Daydream phones
Qualcomm initially proffered only sparse details about its new Snapdragon 821 chipset when it was announced in early July, but the company has revealed information at annual consumer tech trade show IFA that paints a more detailed picture of the SoC and its capabilities.

According to today’s series of press releases, the Snapdragon 821 (MSM8996Pro) is 10% faster in boot times than the 820, can reduce app load times by 10%, improves general performance by up to 10%, and provides smoother UI experiences and browsing performance.
In addition to having CPU speeds of up to 2.4 GHz, we now know that the GPU on the Snapdragon 821 is an Adreno 530 running at 653 MHz, representing a 5% bump over the same chip on the Snapdragon 820. Usually such performance improvements come with architectural upgrades in chips.
The chipset has been created to offer support for Google’s Daydream VR platform, as well as superior visual and audio quality, virtual reality and gaming experience on mobile devices. Qualcomm specifically noted that the Snapdragon VR toolset will act in accordance with Google Daydream, Tom’s Guide reported. Smartphones will need high-resolution screens and fast CPUs and GPUs, and the headsets will need a bevy of sensors to track motion and head movement.
Companies developing mobile devices for Daydream include Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, Asus, and Alcatel.
As Google expected a number of smartphones coming out soon that will work with Daydream, it seems like Qualcomm is making its way for those devices to be powered by its Snapdragon 821 processor.
