Klopp defends his decision to drop Daniel Sturridge

It was that kind of game. His record shows that when he stays fit and plays regularly, he scores goals.

Spurs now have five points from three matches and Liverpool have four.

Sturridge scored twice in the 5-0 EFL Cup victory over Burton Albion in midweek, but was not able to add to his solitary Premier League start during the trip to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham Hotspur.

Rose preserved Spurs’ unbeaten start to the season by scoring from one of his team’s rare sights on goal, shooting inside the near post after Lamela flicked on Eric Dier’s right-wing cross.

In the 43rd minute, James Milner gave Liverpool the lead from the penalty spot after Erik Lamela fouled Firmino inside the 18-yard box. “In the end a draw was a fair result”.

“Yes, I wish we would have won it but now we have to accept the point and that’s no problem because it’s Tottenham”.

With Spurs on the defensive, it allowed Liverpool to not only go on the attack for a portion of the first half, but it meant that Tottenham were unable to high-press as it would leave gaps in their 4-2-3-1 formation.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher has told Liverpool they must sign better players to ensure they do not lose Philippe Coutinho. “Unfortunately we didn’t have the ball long enough to bring his quality [in to the game]”. We always want to win so we’re not satisfied.

Something that we all forget when discussing football, Klopp reminds us: they’re still humans, too.

He did not have a ideal pre-season, that’s how it is.

“It was a very competitive game”. It was a fantastic game for the neutral. It’s not easy when you play a team who are flawless on the counter attack and you need to take risks.

However, Klopp doesn’t see it that way and dismissed the notion that it was a personal reason as to why he left Sturridge out of the line-up, while also playing down the situation being created by others. They have very good players.

Lovren said: “It’s a disappointment that we didn’t take the three points but it was a good performance from everyone”.

“This game showed again what we can do, how we can play”, Klopp continued, insisting it was not “only about pressing and things like this” although he praised his side for pressing and executing their game plan “really well”.
