Agriculture closes offices in 5 states after threats

The Agriculture Department will reopen some offices that were closed yesterday after an email threat.

The USDA said the messages were received by the agency on Monday and concerned officials about the safety of department personnel.

The USDA continues to work with local and federal authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to determine the seriousness of the threats, Herrick said.

Other offices in Fort Collins, Colo.; Hamden, Conn.; Beltsville, Md.; and Raleigh, N.C., have also been closed.

The exact details surrounding the threats – including who may be behind them and if they are credible – are unknown, at least publicly. All other USDA Offices and the ARS Plains Area office in Ft.

“Personnel at these locations have been made aware of the threats and will not report to these offices until further notice”, Herrick said in his statement.

White House Spokesman Josh Earnest said the Department of Homeland Security is working with USDA “to ensure the safety of their offices and the personnel that work there”. USDA employees will either work from home or take authorized leave until their offices are cleared to open again.

The temporary closures may affect some tourists.

The Forest service for Arapahoe Roosevelt and Canyon Lakes announced in a tweet that their Fort Collins offices were closed due to safety concerns.
