Kemp hits for cycle and Padres beat Rockies 9

In doing so, he joins Boston’s Brock Holt and Texas’ Shin-Soo Choo and Adrian Beltre as players to accomplish the feat this season; overall, Kemp hit the 306th cycle in Major League Baseball history. Dave Winfield and Tony Gwynn played for the franchise, but neither hit for the cycle. His coach, Glenn Hoffman, explained to him this was the first one.

Kemp entered Friday’s game at Coors Field on a six-game hitting streak and secured the cycle with a RBI triple in the top of the ninth, building the Padres’s lead to 9-5, ultimately the game’s final score.

“I had good fastball location and my curve was good”, Kennedy said.

The Padres had finished a triple shy of the cycle 258 times and had finished one hit short 361 times. “We kind of take Kimbrel for granted but he just keeps doing it. We score late in the ninth, and boom, he’s up and gets the job done”. Arenado then hit an infield pop-up to first baseman Derek Norris, but Norris couldn’t handle it and record the out.

Kemp had a two-run homer in the first, single in the third and an RBI double in the seventh. He went to the windup on his first pitch to Gyorko with the bases loaded when second base umpire Lance Barrett called a balk, allowing the runners to advance a base. It was just the fifth homer Ross has issued in more than 145 innings this season. Padres manager Pat Murphy was ejected for arguing the decision. The Rockies then added an insurance run in the 8th. Padres 3B Cory Spangenberg made his first start since coming off the disabled list Friday after missing 38 games with a left knee contusion…. Rockies 1B Justin Morneau took batting practice on the field for the first time since he suffered concussion symptoms and whiplash diving for a ball May 13…. He’s been sidelined since May, but still hopes to return this season.
