This would see an increase from 59 per cent Corbyn managed to attain in the leadership battle in 2015, where he saw off Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall, making him a surprised victor from the radical left-wing.

It found that 52 per cent of full members intend to back Mr Corbyn compared to 40 per cent for Mr Smith.

YouGov say there are a number of caveats, including the fact members still have three weeks to vote ahead of the announcement of the victor in Liverpool on September 24.

The new poll gives a boost to Mr Corbyn’s campaign ahead of another leadership debate in London tomorrow.

His initial election as Labour leader was credited in part to his team’s bespoke phone canvassing app, which helped volunteers contact potential voters.
