Wildfire forces evacuation of 16 homes

A wildfire burning along the Fraser River, just west of Lytton, B.C., has been fanned by strong winds and continues to threaten dozens of homes.

A new estimate released today says the fire has burned five-square kilometres of bush and timber on the west side of the Fraser River, directly across from the Fraser Canyon Village of Lytton, about 250 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.

The fire, now estimated to be about 17 hectares in size, was first reported this morning.

All properties on South Spencer Road north of Papyum 27 IR north to the southern boundary of Styren IR 9 and Lytton IR 9B are being notified of a potential evacuation.

UPDATE: 6:15 p.m.

Nine homes in the Lytton First Nation are under an evacuation order and another 20 are on alert.

Catherall says the fire about two kilometres south of Lytton is now 25 per cent contained.

“We are seeing quite aggressive fire behavior”. He said if an evacuation order is given for his property, he’s determined to stay and protect his home.

New evacuation alert issued by TNRD at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Homes under an evacuation alert should be prepared to evacuate at any time.

The interface fire is displaying rank three fire behaviour, which is a fire with a moderate rate of spread and some candling.

Kamloops Fire information officer Rachel Witt says the fire is aggressive, and high winds are spreading the flames.

Over 40 firefighters, two helicopters and four air tankers are in the area to battle the fire.
