Rafael Nadal, of Spain, holds his left wrist while answering questions after defeating Denis Istomin, of Uzbekistan, during the first round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, in NY. “I’ve played a lot of tennis and I think often it’s been the case at the US Open that guys at this stage of this year are worn out”.

NEW YORK (AP) – The victory came on clay, and it came 4 1/2 months ago.

The pair famously played the longest women’s match of all time at the 2011 Australian Open where Schiavone saved six match points in a four hour 44-minute marathon.

Novak Djokovic takes on Jiri Vesely in the men’s singles second round clash of the 2016 US Open on Wednesday (31 August).

“Novak wasn’t at his best level, that’s for sure, and he made a lot of mistakes from the beginning”, Vesely said that day.

“That is coming, because I feel the wrist much better, and every day feel that the wrist is a little bit better”.

The left-handed Vesely retired from his last match before the U.S. Open because of problems with the forearm.

Rafa Nadal was worn out from his Rio Olympics exertions after emerging from an injury absence to win doubles gold, but the Spaniard perked back up with his trip to NY for the US Open.

Vesely’s misfortune was a welcome boost for world number one Djokovic, who had required treatment on his upper right arm in his laboured first round win over Jerzy Janowicz on Monday.

During the match, he hit first serves around 160kmh and sometimes slower – 40kmh or so below his usual average speed.

Djokovic, a 12-time grand slam victor, took a medical timeout midway through the first set to receive treatment on his right arm.

“Different surface, different circumstances, best-of-five”.

“It was hard to follow Phil Collins”, joked Djokovic in reference to the lengthy opening ceremony which featured the veteran English rocker under the new $150 million roof on the Arthur Ashe Stadium. You still have the best players in the world.

A former No. 1, Wozniacki is now ranked 74th after dealing with an ankle injury and a series of losses. He has a big game, a big serve, big forehand, and moves well for his size. So let’s see. Conditions are quite suitable to my style of the game.

“To be honest, I take it day by day”, said Djokovic, who is seeking to win his 13th career major, one shy of Nadal and Pete Sampras’ 14 and four behind Federer’s all-time mark of 17.

Those two matches will highlight the schedule during the third day of competition at the national championship.

Polona Hercog was forced to quit her match with Angelique Kerber after clearly wilting in the 33-degree heat.

But the French Open champion needed courtside treatment from a doctor after dropping the first set.

Two highly-fancied potential title winners are also in second round action.

Muguruza carved out a gritty 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Belgian qualifier Elise Mertens. The players combined for 99 winners Monday.

The Australian Open champ blew a 4-1 lead in the second set then had to save three set points before pulling out a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win in 92 minutes over Mirjana Lucic-Baroni on Wednesday.
