‘Severe’ quake strikes off East Cape
It struck at 10:04am, 25km deep and about 100km northeast of Te Araroa and 188km from Gisborne, in the Pacific Ocean.

A 5.7-magnitude natural disaster has struck off New Zealand’s East Cape, rattling residents there and felt as far south as Wellington.
The red dot marks the site of the 5.7 quake.
UPDATED 11.35AM: There’s been a quake in the waters off East Cape that’s being classed as severe.
GeoNet initially reported the first quake was a “moderate” magnitude 5.0 shake that had struck 20km south-west of Te Araroa.
Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence says an evacuation order is in force for East Cape.

The quake was so strong it was felt in Wellington too – and some reports were trickly in from the South Island as we wrote this.
