Germany comes up with idea how to help Italy in earthquake’s aftermath

Obviously, Germany couldn’t, but it’s mighty kind of her to finally admit her mistakes. “And the positive thing is that German businesses also want to contribute and the German football league wants to organise a (fund-raising) match”, she said.

“Germany will remain Germany – with all that is dear to us”, Merkel said in an interview with Germany’s “Süddeutsche Zeitung” daily. Though Merkel did not mention Italy’s tax-cut plans, she did give the Italian premier reason to be optimistic about winning budget leeway for post-disaster expenditure.

To stem the influx, Merkel championed an European Union deal with Turkey which has prompted accusations that she has cosied up to an authoritarian leader with a patchy human rights record.

Mrs Merkel has stood by the comments and has angered her opponents by constantly repeating it, insisting this week: “I’m convinced it was the right phrase”.

Germany registered over a million newcomers past year, though the actual number is believed to be lower, and the influx has unsettled many residents.

The proposed law was greeted with outrage by MEPs yesterday, who described it as inhumane and said it would make it impossible for asylum seekers to integrate into European society.

In March, the AfD experienced a similar last-minute boost when they won 24 per cent of a regional vote despite only polling at 19 per cent, and leader Leif-Erik Holm expects the current social climate in Germany to lead to another success this weekend. “We can’t take this unbearable dictator of a Chancellor any more”.

Renzi said that Italy would prioritise allocating existing funds to help protect structures against earthquakes. “Whichever way you look at it, the consequences are dramatic for Europe”.

Meanwhile, thousands more migrants have been rescued in the Mediterranean.

In 2015 though, global attention was focused on the route into Europe via the Balkans.

With her party facing humiliating defeats in two state elections this month, she told the lawmakers that it was important to take the public’s concerns seriously. It has been one year since she first declared “we can do this”. Merkel will most probably finish her term next year without facing any serious challenge from within.
