However, speaking on Radio Scotland on Wednesday morning, UK Labour leadership challenger Owen Smith said he wouldn’t stand in the way of a rerun of 2014’s vote on the country’s independence.

He set out plans to commit Labour to undertake a regular gender audit of party policies and to consult on the setting up of a Women’s Advisory Board, which will help ensure decisions made by the party’s leadership better reflect and meet the needs of women from across society.

Ahead of May’s Holyrood election, Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said she never wanted to take part in another referendum and ruled out giving her backing to one over the five-year term of parliament.

According to the party, more than 640,000 members and supporters are eligible to vote in the contest between Mr Corbyn and Mr Smith. “I’m very clear that I want Scotland to stay in the United Kingdom”.

When asked why there was no reference to online trolling in the digital agenda paper, Mr Corbyn insisted that Labour had strict anti-bullying rules. According to the survey Corbyn’s main strength is that party members perceive him as “principled”, with 76% of those questioned agreeing with this description whilst also being trusted for “honesty” (64%) and for “shares my political outlook” (58%).

Former leadership contender Angela Eagle has said Mr Corbyn failed to intervene as she suffered abuse and was called “Angie the Dyke” after she challenged him for the top job.

Ms Dugdale has said that it would be wrong for the United Kingdom government to block a referendum if it were backed by the Scottish people, but reiterated that the party’s formal position is one of opposition.

Corbyn’s timing to make #DigitalDemocracy a national conversation was acknowledged as part of Labour’s realization that it can not win elections by fighting them in the way it has fought them in the past.

“That is why the next Labour Government will reverse a generation of underinvestment in housing, particularly council housing, and give the chance of a decent, secure, affordable home back to every family and citizen”.

They added: “The latest YouGov poll shows Labour voters see Theresa May more favourably than Corbyn, and the Tories and media haven’t even scratched the surface on his past statements such as his pro-IRA and Hamas views”. Get more Spectator for less – just £12 for 12 issues.
