The Mayor of London has been urged to launch a wide-ranging review into the future of the Notting Hill Carnival, after the local MP said the event risked turning into a “crime fest”, and police chiefs complained it had become unsafe for officers.
This year’s arrest count is nothing compared to that of 2015, when over 400 people ended up in custody.
Four stabbings have been reported on Notting Hill Carnival’s first day, which is dedicated to children and families.
Both of their conditions are not life threatening and no arrests have been made, police said.
The latest figures from Scotland Yard on Tuesday showed that of the 454 people arrested on Sunday and Monday, 25 were held for assaulting police.
More than a million revellers are thought to have descended on west London on the bank holiday weekend to mark the carnival’s 50th anniversary.
Police said they had seized 26 knives in total while patrolling the event.
Officers understand that the massive canister, found on Queensway in Westminster, has the capacity to fill 2,250 small canisters.
A reveler takes part in the Monday parade, during the second and final day of the Notting Hill Carnival, in London, Monday Aug. 29, 2016.
At the roots of the Notting Hill Carnival are the Caribbean carnivals of the early 19th century – a particularly strong tradition in Trinidad – which were all about celebrating the abolition of slavery and the slave trade. I can actually feel it.
A man also approached officers at Kensal Rise tube station, telling them that he had been stabbed, before leaving the scene.
