ASUS has today announced the ZenWatch 3 at IFA in Berlin, Germany, the latest entry in its family of Android Wear smartwatches. As mentioned the device has also moved to a three-button system (the first non-LTE Android Wear smartwatch to do so), which provides quick access to opening the ZenFit fitness app and “changing the display modes”.
The ASUS ZenWatch 3 comes in three variants when it comes to the watch cases. The metal body will be will be available in gunmetal, silver and rose gold colors, and the smartwatch will be available with two kinds of straps – Italian leather or rubber. Asus poetically calls this bezel “the corona of an annular solar eclipse”. With a simple, clean design, the latest ZenPad features a 9.7-inch touchscreen display (2048 x 1536) and its chassis comes from a single piece of aluminum. That display has a 400 by 400 resolution, about 287ppi if you’re keeping count, and at first glance, it’s going to be nice, bright and vivid. We’ll have to wait and see how well that actually works when we review it. It is a little better than the second generation Moto 360 smartwatches. This year, Asus is back with the ZenWatch 3, and it is addressing the pathetic battery life problems which have plagued android smartwatch users since the inception of wearable in the market. An optional battery pack created to give an additional 40 per cent charge is also available. Its battery is 340mAh and the company promises “up to two days” of use, with fast-charging functionality – Asus notes that it only takes 15 minutes to reach a 60 percent charge with its HyperCharge technology. An optional battery pack is also available, providing 40 percent more battery life. As of this moment, more clarity is needed as to what they mean by this. A United States release has also been announced.
It’s got activity tracking (naturally). However, one must not expect any major fitness data from the watch as its primary goal is not fitness. Products featured onstage include ZenBook 3, Transformer 3 Pro, Transformer 3, ZenPad 3S 10 and ZenScreen.
The new ZenWatch 3 sports a design language that is totally different from its predecessor.
