More of Oklahoma’s graduating seniors took the ACT college entrance exam than in the previous five years, according to information released today by ACT.
This year’s 1,205 ACT-tested students had an average composite score of 21.5, above the IL statewide average composite of 20.8.
The school system is anticipating having about 440 students system-wide this fall.
ACT predicted a 1.3 to 1.8 score decline for the seven additional states that funded ACT testing for all juniors in 2015 as part of their statewide assessments.
This year Edmond North students achieved a new record high average score on the ACT.
As compared to the 2015 seniors, the 2016 WCHS senior class had slight drops ranging from.2 to.5 in the composite and all subject areas except for one. Those repeating the ACT a second time had an average composite score of 22.8.
“I am proud of this distinct accomplishment and the progress within our district”. The county’s average score is higher than the state average of 21.1, and the national average of 20.8. Only 18 states, including Nevada, reported 100 percent participation.
Barren County High principal Brad Johnson said the school works individually with students to provide the sort of help each student needs. “The average composite score for the 18 states is 19.8”.
The ACT is the primary college-entry exam used by Missouri students and is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, with 36 being the highest. “As part of our Building Improvement plan we will identify strategies to put in place to help students improve their ACT score”.
The “Condition of College and Career Readiness 2016” report differs from the January 2016 results for the state’s 11th-grade students who took the ACT Plus Writing in March of 2015. The percentages of college-ready ACT-tested students from District 308 show that: 72 percent are ready for college English composition coursework, compared with only 64 percent statewide and 61 percent nationally; 49 percent are college-ready in social science coursework, compared with 42 percent statewide and 44 percent nationally; 46 percent are college-ready in college algebra coursework, compared with 41 percent statewide and 41 percent nationally; 42 percent are college-ready in biology coursework, compared with 36 percent statewide and 36 percent nationally; 30 percent are college-ready in all four subjects, compared with 26 percent statewide and 26 percent nationally.
Overall, 25 percent of graduates earned benchmark scores in all four subjects. Among the steps were to increase enrollment in higher level math and science courses, continue to develop resources for parents and students, and continue to give the exam at no charge to all juniors.
