Hernandez can’t stop Mariners’ slide in 14-1 loss to Rangers
Their previous low point 11 runs on July 29 in a 12-1 loss to the Cubs in Chicago…a bullpen relay of Vidal Nuno, Arquimedes Caminero and Pat Venditte gave up eight runs in four innings…the Mariners are 11 1/2 games behind first-place Texas, which matches their largest deficit of the season.

Gomez provided the comfort, walking to start the third and scoring the game’s first run on a Nomar Mazara groundout following a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt.

Rougned Odor quickly atoned for his baserunning blunders with a big blast for the Texas Rangers.
Odor tied a career high with five RBIs and Adrian Beltre and Ryan Rua also homered as the Rangers tied their season high with five homers.
The process that led up to that walkoff hit is what had fans second-guessing manager Scott Servais on social media and other places late into the night, regardless of his reasons. The seventh inning got away from us, trying to work through that. Seattle though will get their best chance to grab a win in this series as they send Felix Hernandez to the mound here as he will face off against Martin Perez and while the King has been much better at home than on the road this season and throughout his career he and his team are basically in a must win game tonight. “But if I have my pitches, if I’ve got everything working, I think I can get those guys out”. Houston remained 8½ games back after winning earlier Tuesday against Oakland. The Mariners Kyle Seasger, who caught a Carlos Beltran fly out, was charged with the throwing error to the bag. In between, Odor had a single to right but was easily thrown out by right fielder Shawn O’Malley when trying to stretch that hit to a double.
“We’ve just got to go out there and play with everybody and show people who we are”, Hernandez said after giving up Carlos Gomez’s grand slam in the Rangers’ 14-1 romp Wednesday. “There is a certain margin of error in some situations”.
Andrus’ single to left produced one run before Gomez unloaded a 405-foot drive to left for a grand slam and a 6-0 lead.
“Texas is an aggressive team and they are swinging”, Servais said. It kind of went back and forth. “Unfortunately, they got the last blow”. Detwiler allowed just one run on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings.
Hamels struck out four and walked four while his ERA rose from 2.67 to 2.91.

Mariners: Starting pitcher James Paxton ripped a fingernail in the third, but still pitched five innings. There is no structural damage and he is taking medication to help with the inflammation.
The Mariners started Wednesday trailing Baltimore by four games in the race for the American League’s final wild-card berth.
Rangers: RHP Colby Lewis allowed five runs and eight hits over 3 1-3 innings in a rehab start for Double-A Frisco. It marked the Rangers’ sixth walk-off victory of the season.

Looking for his first victory since August 11, Garza bounced back from a back-luck outing his last time out with his longest start of the season and held the Cardinals to use three hits with a pair of walks over seven innings of work.
