Labour general secretary Iain McNichol hits back at John McDonnell ‘purge’ complaints
It follows claims from shadow chancellor John McDonnell that thousands of members and registered supporters had been reportedly denied a vote without a proper explanation.

But Labour has said the suspensions had come as part of a “robust validation process” of the nearly 650,000 people eligible to vote.
“A number of people have contacted me as a result of that and we have sent the names in that we’re concerned about to the general secretary, and asked him to make sure that the party checks into this carefully to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote is able to vote in this election”.
But despite having little support among Labour MPs, Mr Corbyn’s supporters believe he remains popular among grassroots party members.
Bfawu bakers’ union general secretary Ronnie Draper has spoken out after he was suspended from the Labour Party yesterday, Thursday.
In his statement, Draper, whose union has almost 20,000 members, said he had received an email from the party on Tuesday saying he was suspended.
Mr Corbyn responded: “It’s an enormous honour to be selected and elected as a Labour member of Parliament”.
“Drawing on Britain’s rich cultural heritage, Labour under my leadership will commit to extending access and participation in the arts to all people and all communities across Britain”.
The BFAWU union, which has nearly 20,000 members in the food industry, is backing Mr Corbyn in the leadership contest against Owen Smith.
Allies of Jeremy Corbyn are furious at what they see as attempts to tilt the leadership contest by purging the party membership of his backers. His suspension came alongside those of many other Labour Party members singled out for comments made on Twitter or for previously supporting other parties. “The conduct of this election must be fair and even-handed”. After the NEC ruled they were not, a group of members won a high court challenge against the decision, only for this to be overturned on appeal.

With the backdrop of the global Edinburgh arts festival, the party leader launched his culture policy for government, which includes a pledge to “reverse Tory real terms cuts to arts expenditure and restore grant in aid funding of the Arts Council” working within Labour’s so-called fiscal crediblity rule, which aims to balance day-to-day spending with the amount raised in taxes.
